Banksia cones

Banksia grandis is native to southwestern Australia and is the Banksia species that produces the largest cones in a family of about 80 subspecies. This species is also known as Bull Banksia, Giant Banksia, or Mangite. Banksia grandis grows as a tree up to 15 meters tall. What's fascinating about Banksias is that the seed heads only open and release the seeds when exposed to the heat of a bushfire. These seeds are then dispersed by the wind. Banksias are Australian wildflowers and, as such, produce very attractive blossoms during the summer months.
The cones are very hard and can be turned exceptionally well. Because they are very decorative, they can be used for a wide variety of turned objects, jewelry, and other crafts. Even unworked, as purely decorative pieces, they are a real eye-catcher.
